Lithophanes are a unique form of porcelain night lights, crafted using a lost art dating back to the 1800s. These thin, translucent pieces display highly detailed images that appear almost magically when illuminated from behind. The varying thicknesses of the carved porcelain allow the light to shine through, creating a photographic-quality image with a three-dimensional effect.

The creation process begins by carving the desired image into a translucent wax, which is then used to create a plaster mold. Fine porcelain clay is then cast into this mold and fired in a kiln at an exceptional temperature of 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. This high-heat firing is what gives the porcelain its translucency and durability.

Lithophanes were first invented in France in 1827 and gained popularity throughout Europe until the early 1900s. Their decline in the face of electric lighting is ironic, as they are indeed better suited to electric illumination than candles. We have been reproducing these antique lithophanes for the past 32 years, and have also learned to engrave our own original designs.

Our lithophanes offer a beautiful and practical work of art, one that can be used daily for years to come. We have taken this art form one step further by hand-applying a ceramic underglaze to the back of the porcelain and firing it again. This additional firing fuses the color permanently to the porcelain, allowing the hues to gently diffuse through the translucent material when lit, adding another layer of beauty to the piece.

The enchanting Fairy design featured here is from an original painting by David Delamare. She embodies the perfect combination of beauty and ethereal mystery, which is why she has been one of our most popular designs for many years. Timeless and classic, she is sure to bring a smile every time you glance her way.

Crafted from kiln-fired porcelain, our lithophanes are waterproof, non-porous, and will never fade or discolor. Handmade in the USA, each piece measures approximately 5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, and comes complete with a 7-watt bulb and a brief history of the art form, all presented in an attractive and sturdy box. These high-quality, functional works of art make for truly unique and cherished gifts, especially for those who are hard to shop for.
